Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has questioned Anthony Martial‘s career at the club, believing the player is ‘going backwards’.
The Frenchman introduced himself to the world in spectacular fashion by scoring on his debut against fierce rivals Liverpool after destroying their defence with a dazzling run.
Martial arrived at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal‘s management as a relative unknown to English football and arrived for a rather heft fee.
In fact, some sections of the media even wrote him off as a waste of money before even having made a single appearance for United.
Ferdinand though believes Anthony has gone backwards since that debut season and has potentially failed to develop.
According to the Mirror, Rio said: “In the season he arrived at Old Trafford, there was an argument for saying Martial was the most exciting teenager in world football, but he is going backwards.”
“And you sense this is also a big year for Marcus Rashford. The talent at Mourinho’s disposal is undeniable. But can he get the best out of them, and play in a way that maximises their ability?”
In his debut season the former AS Monaco man was scoring goals with ease before suffering a small injury ahead of a Europa League clash.
This is when Marcus Rashford emerged to take his place and make a name for himself on the footballing scene too.
Ever since then the two have been competing with each other for the same spot with Martial never playing in the same type of form again.
Unfortunately for the youngster, he’s experienced a change of managers and also suffered from personal issues that affected his form.
