How Developer Fatshark Created Their Passion Project in Vermintide 2

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a passion project developed by Fatshark, a studio which was formed ten years ago in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the years, Fatshark has built a solid foundation in the online multiplayer genre. Many of the core team members first met through tabletop gaming and it was during these late nights playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay that the foundation of the Vermintide franchise was formed.

Six years after Fatshark was founded – and six released titles later – the studio had the financial means, tech and developers to take on the rich and very visual Warhammer universe. It was a no-brainer; this was something we had always wanted to do. After lengthy and sometimes heated internal discussions, we made a pitch to Games Workshop, the developer and custodian of the Warhammer world. We proposed a game where players in co-op with others would take on the role as one of the many iconic heroes of the Old World and take on hordes of enemies in frenzied first-person melee action combat.

Since we wanted to pay homage to a game world enjoyed and experienced by so many for so long, we knew there would be no shortcuts when it came to character presentation, art style and attention to detail. Games Workshop agreed, and Vermintide went from idea to production.

Expanding the Boundaries of our Tech

Fatshark has always had strong technology, for example having developed the in-house game engine Bitsquid/Stingray which was licensed to others and eventually sold to Autodesk. Therefore, it is perhaps no surprise that our work to take Vermintide 2 to Xbox One is just as much engineer pride as lore nerdery. The joy of getting your tech to tune in and make wonders on the hardware is just as great as when you get to shake hands with long-time fans of Warhammer telling you “you nailed it”.

Vermintide 2 on Xbox Game Pass

For the second game in the franchise, Vermintide 2, we decided to work with Microsoft to make the title available on Xbox Game Pass on the same day as the release. For an indie developer — self-publishing a multiplayer game with a limited marketing budget — it’s key to have a strong player base and raise awareness of the title through word of mouth. Xbox Game Pass offers exactly that.

Even after release of the game, the whole Fatshark team is working on Vermintide 2 and will support the game just like we did with the first installment in the series. Events, DLC and existing content are all in the making!

MixPlay and Streaming Support

Vermintide 2 is very much about experiencing bravery and epic battles together with others, either with the players in your party, your streaming audience and through community events.

But our efforts for social gaming don’t end there. Through the Vermintide 2 MixPlay feature on Mxier, streamers can let their audience decide the battle’s outcome by voting live on what the next enemy spawn should be or reward players with potions and bombs. This makes for new and tricky situations where the players must fight tooth and nail to survive the mission with their audience pulling the strings behind the curtain.

How to Play Vermintide 2 Effectively

Vermintide 2 is a 4-player co-op action game designed to be played together with friends. A key component in the game is the challenge it provides. We have included 4 levels of difficulty to up the stakes as you improve your skill, starting with lowest to highest: Recruit, Veteran, Champion and Legend. The higher the difficulty, the greater the reward will be at the end of a successful mission. Check out some tips and tricks here.

Join the Fight for Survival

We are in this for the long run with the first major DLC of Vermintide 2 coming soon and more in the making. Thank you for reading and don’t forget to check out Vermintide 2, live now on Xbox Game Pass!

The 23 best World Cup players after the first round of action

Cristiano RonaldoGetty Images

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has arrived.

The first round of group stage fixtures is already over, with every single one of the 32 World Cup nations competing at least once already — and boy, has the tournament created drama.

Russia got the World Cup off to a thrilling start when it wowed crowds with a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the curtain-raising game on June 14, before tournament favourites like Argentina and Brazil failed to register a win. Germany, the 2014 World Cup winners, even lost.

But who are the key players after round one?

Business Insider has put together a power ranking of the 23 best soccer players in Russia so far in the tournament, using statistical data from number-crunching soccer site whoscored.com. The website grades players based on how the individual performs relative to his position, and ranks each player out of a maximum score of 10.

Keep scrolling to see who made the list, ranked by score in ascending order.

23. Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Thór Halldórsson — 7.86.

Considering Argentina can boast elite forwards like Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero, the country was expected to bulldoze through Iceland on June 16.

But Iceland flipped the pre-match script and stunned the South American side by claiming a 1-1 draw, with goalkeeper Hannes Thór Halldórsson earning rave reviews for his role between the sticks.

Halldórsson even saved a penalty from Messi (see picture above) and if that is not worthy of a place on this list, we don’t know what is.

22. Russia defender Yuri Zhirkov — 7.87.

Yuri Zhirkov is the lowest-ranked entrant from the five Russians on this list.

The left back helped get the very best out of key man Aleksandr Golovin thanks to his intuitive link-up play with the midfielder in Russia’s outstanding 5-0 slaughter over Saudi Arabia.

Zhirkov was ambitious with the variety in his passing but did not neglect his defensive duties with two clearances and four tackles from the back.

21. Belgium attacker Dries Mertens — 7.99.
Getty Images

Had he not scored a wondergoal, there is no doubt that Dries Mertens would have failed to make this list.

This is because he hardly did anything else that was worthy of note in Belgium’s victory over Panama on Monday.

However, goals mean a lot. Especially when they arrive, in spectacular fashion, when the team needs them most.

Mertens scored Belgium’s first goal of the game with a brilliant volley in the 47th minute, and it helped the team on its way to a confidence-boosting 3-0 win.

These are the 10 best-selling sneakers of the year so far (NKE)

1 Nike TanjunNike.com

The NPD sports-industry analyst Matt Powell recently revealed a list of the 10 top-selling sneakers of the first quarter of 2018.
All 10 were shoes made by Nike. Nine were either Nike or its Jordan brand, and the 10th was a shoe by Converse, which is also a Nike subsidiary.
For the first time in months, there were no Adidas shoes among the top 10.
None of the top-selling sneakers were performance shoes, continuing the trend away from performance sneakers.

Nike is dominating the sneaker industry.

According to the NPD sports-industry analyst Matt Powell, nine of the 10 best-selling sneakers in the first quarter of 2018 were made by either Nike or its Jordan brand. The remaining sneaker was the Converse All Star Low, which is also made by a Nike subsidiary. Powell also noted that for the first time in months, no Adidas shoes were among the 10 best-selling sneakers, in part because the company is diversifying its portfolio.

He explains in his note that the first-quarter sales figures show a continuing shift away from performance and toward lifestyle, thanks to the ongoing athleisure trend. The $65 Nike Tanjun remained in the No. 1 spot based on sales. In February, Powell told Business Insider the affordable shoe posting such strong sales reflected a shift toward a more moderate market.

What the cast of ‘Out of the Box’ is doing 20 years later

“Out of the Box” was a popular children’s show that aired from 1998 to 2004. The hosts, Tony and Vivian, sang and made crafts inside of an imaginary box made entirely out of cardboard. We caught up with them 20 years after the first episode aired. Tony has also announced the “Tony James: Outside the Box” tour, a special set of appearances across the US and Canada that give fans of the show a chance to meet him in person. Following is a transcript of the video.

Tony: People always ask me what are some of my strongest memories from the show, what are some of my favorite episodes, and really, they’re all wonderful in their own way, but what I really remember if Viv’s laughter.
